	Counter-Mapping Berlin: Experimentelle Stadtentwürfe nach der Berliner KonferenzAn Amo Collective project

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Berlin Conference whose echoes of domination and separation continue to reverberate through our bodies, institutions, and relationships. Contrary to colonialist mapping and division, the project proposes counter-mapping – collective, artistic mapping – as resistance against dominant spatial practices. We investigate how these historical events continue to shape urban practices and communal life today, and ask: How can we counteract the resulting forms of discrimination in our postcolonial present? What decolonial futures can we envision for our neighborhoods?Through sound, dance, poetry, performance, decolonial storytelling and collective mapping we nurture a process that rethinks and practices sustainable, equitable relationships among decolonial initiatives. Counter-Mapping Berlin features workshops, artistic events, and a collaborative exhibition, creating an open cultural and arts space for collaboration. Kiosk Batakari, a pop-up pavilion in the backyards of Anthon-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße, will serve as a hub for critical cartographic practice and networking.

Our vision for Berlin's future is to transcend the dominant spatial practices and social divisions which are directly tied to its history. Through collective artistic counter-mapping practices, we strive to develop a decolonial, anti-discriminatory perspective in collaboration with the urban community and beyond.

In the context of the project, we are organising the “Counter-mapping Days” in July and the “Poetic Cartography Days” in November.

The Poetic Cartography Days are structured as a festival-residency designed to foster care, neighborliness, and friendship through poetry. Over three days, together with the invited artists, we will share public moments with the audience and engage in more intimate gatherings to create an atmosphere of connection and collaboration. 

Through performances, site-specific intervention, and workshops, we will explore Who We Are, Where We Come From, and Where We Are Going, mapping a space of connection and solidarity. The Poetic Cartography Days will feature poets and artists including: Stefanie-Lahya Aukongo, Fatim Selina Diaby, &#38;nbsp;Hanita Firoozmand, Agie Gambian CookBook, Otis Mensah, Savannah Sipho, Rami Shalati, Nhã Thuyên and&#38;nbsp;Daniela Zambrano Almidón.

The Amo Salon is located at

The closest subway stations are:
U Stadtmitte (200m)
U Hausvogteiplatz (210m)
The station Stadtmitte has an elevator to the sidewalk, but you have to cross a small street with to get to the main sidewalk.

The closest bus stops are Jerusalemer Straße (350m) and Werderscher Markt (450m).
The sidewalks of Anton-Wilmelm-Amo Straße (formerly M-Straße) have a smooth pavement. There are curb cuts on the crossing Anton-Wilmelm-Amo Straße and Markgrafenstraße.
The space is on the ground floor and can be entered via a provided mobile ramp. The door of our space does not open automatically, but the door will either be wide open, or someone will be there to open it for you. Straight on, there is another door leading to the backyard which will also be wide open or opened for you.

Accessibility
Most of the event will take place outside in the backyard which has pavement which is in some parts not smooth but bumpy.
Inside, we have a low-sensory space with different spaces to sit or lie down. Movement, stimming, taking breaks etc. are welcome there, but no chatting or louder noises.
Chairs with backs are available. We have space to store walkers, canes etc.
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome at our space.
We have a wheelchair accessible bathroom. The bathroom has a toilet with handles and a low sink. There is a bin and disinfectant wipes. The bathroom is gender neutral.
For this event, there are no ASL or DGS interpreters available.

 The Poetic Cartography Days will create a festival-residency atmosphere in the Amo Salon, providing a space for communal engagement and the nurturing of friendships through poetry. Guided by the participation of esteemed artists, poets, and activists, this three-day festival-residency will offer a counter-narrative to the Berlin Conference, aligning with the central theme of this year's project by the Amo Collective Berlin “Counter-Mapping Berlin: Experimentel place-making after the Berlin Conference”.

This three-day festival offers a space for artistic exchange and the opportunity to reflect on the role of art in resisting oppressive spatial practices. Through performances, discussions, and workshops, participants together with the public will explore how poetry and art can foster new ways of thinking about space-making, neighboring and community.

Building on the foundation of the Counter-Mapping Days festival held in July of this year, we continue to trace our collective journeys and celebrate where we stand today, highlighting and honoring our communities. This act of celebration, recognition, and togetherness stands in contrast to the violence of separation initiated by the Berlin Conference 140 years ago.

The Poetic Cartography Days are inspired by Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo and joyous Afro-diasporic, queer, mestizo, and anti-ableist expressions. Through performances, site-specific interventions, and workshops, we will explore Who We Are, Where We Come From, and Where We Are Going, mapping a space of connection and solidarity. The festival-residency will feature poets and artists including Stefanie-Lahya Aukongo, Fatim Selina Diaby, Hanita Firoozmand, Agie Gambian CookBook, Otis Mensah, Savannah Sipho, Rami Shalati, Nhã Thuyên and Daniela Zambrano Almidón.

The Poetic Cartography Days will also mark the inauguration of the new entrance to the Institut für Europäische Ethnologie (IfEE) at Amo Salon. As part of a collaborative effort, the Institute has created an entrance featuring a constructed ramp for accessibility, offering a warm welcome to all students, faculty, staff, and members of civil society. This entrance will serve as a dedicated exhibition space, showcasing the Institute’s collaborative work on critical topics such as (anti-)racism, intersectionality, and the conviviality of urban society. It will also highlight projects focused on multimodal, public, and engaged anthropology. 

For the opening of the new entrance and poetry festival, the Amo Living Archive curated by Amo Collective Berlin will be on display, featuring works by members of the collective, as well as special contributions by Coopdisco with their research on the history of the institute's building, Decolonize Berlin in collaboration with the artist Nnenna Onuoha on the history of Re-naming M*straße, and an alternative portrait of Anton Wilhelm Amo by the artist and activist Salina Momade &#38;amp; the Black Student Union of Humboldt University in collaboration with the artist and performer Isaiah Lopaz.

TEAMThe curatorial and production efforts for the Poetic Cartography Festival and the Amo Living Archive exhibition are being led by Melanie Garland, hn. lyonga and Alejandra Atalah, in collaboration with a dedicated core team from the Counter-Mapping Project and members of the Amo Collective, including Carla J. Maier, Julia Seibert, Ingri Pavezi, Adela Taleb, Magdalena Buchczyk, Piero Trias, Nicole Pearson, Eryn Staiblin, Ren Loren Britton and Flora Corinna Ohlberger. Special thanks are extended to the documentation team: Inti Gallardo, Pablo Hassmann, Kika Echeverria, Imad Gebrael for his graphic design contributions and Christian Maier in the technical set-up. Additionally, recognition is given to IfEE professors Regina Römhild, Magdalena Buchczyk and Ignacio Farías for their support and valuable guidance, also in collaboration with coopdisco, in developing the new entrance and exhibition space at the IfEE.

The Counter-mapping Days will be a joyful, playful response to the Berlin Conference and an opportunity for us to pause, reflect, and reimagine a collective future. Over three days of worskshops, we will use mapping and wayfinding to bring communities together – as a thread that weaves us back to ourselves, to each other, and to this world. We use maps not to erase and divide but to reveal and connect.&#38;nbsp; 

The Counter-mapping Days are inspired by the Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo and joyous Afro-diasporic, queer, mestizo, and anti-ableist expressions. We will turn into a space for immersive experiences that combines workshops and activities with spaces for contemplation and connection. Together, we will learn to navigate multiple forms of knowledge toward personal transformation and solidarity.

Counter-mapping the Akan Experience: Unraveling the Impact of the Berlin Conference
Facilitator: Kwame Aidoo

Our counter-mapping journey begins with Anton Wilhelm Amo´s Akan (Nzema) community.&#38;nbsp; Using their experiences as a guiding framework we examine how the conference divided the Akan community across different countries and languages giving us valuable insight into the broader impact of the conference on communities across Africa. 
Ghanaian artist, performer, and researcher Kwame Aidoo delves into Akan culture, philosophy, and cosmology before and after the Berlin Conference.&#38;nbsp; We seek to understand the lasting effects of colonialism and honor the resilience and genius of the Akan community in preserving their cultural identity and connections.

Food for Thought invites participants to mindfully explore food, ingredients, and cooking practices to deepen our understanding of our personal histories, cultural heritage, and connections to each other.&#38;nbsp; The workshop encourages participants to savor the flavors, stories, and traditions behind various cuisines fostering a deeper appreciation of how food unites us.

From there we make our way to freedom.&#38;nbsp; Freedom is a place!

The station Stadtmitte has an elevator to the sidewalk, but you have to cross a small street with curb cuts to get to the main sidewalk.

The closest bus stops are Jerusalemer Straße (350m) and Werderscher Markt (450m).
The sidewalks of Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße have a smooth pavement. There are curb cuts on the crossing Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße and Markgrafenstraße.
The space is on the ground floor and can be entered via a provided mobile ramp. The door of our space does not open automatically, but the door will either be wide open, or someone will be there to open it for you. Straight on, there is another door leading to the backyard which will also be wide open or opened for you.

Accessibility
The event is fully wheelchair accessible as it takes place outside in the backyard which has pavement which is in some parts not smooth but bumpy.&#38;nbsp;
In the building the event is behind we have a wheelchair accessible bathroom. The bathroom has a toilet with handles/grab bars and a low sink. There is a bin and disinfectant wipes. The bathroom is gender neutral.
Inside, we have a low-sensory space with different spaces to sit or lie down. Movement, stimming, taking breaks etc. are welcome there, but no chatting or louder noises.&#38;nbsp;This space will be lit minimally and include multiple soft surfaces &#38;amp; textiles.
Chairs with backs are available. We have space to store walkers, canes etc.
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome at our space.Please come to this event no-scent, please avoid scented products like (detergents, shampoo, soaps and perfumes).

For this event, there are no ASL or DGS interpreters available.For this event, there will not be childcare available.

	Was ist Counter-Mapping Berlin?Counter-Mapping Berlin: Experimentelle Stadtentwürfe nach der Berliner KonferenzEin Projekt des Amo Collective Berlin
In diesem Jahr jährt sich die Berliner Konferenz zum 140. Mal. Der Nachhall von Herrschaft und Trennung hallt noch immer in unseren Körpern, Institutionen und Beziehungen nach. Im Gegensatz zur kolonialistischen Kartierung und Teilung schlägt das Projekt Gegenkartierung – ein kollektives, künstlerisches Counter-Mapping – als Widerstand gegen die dominanten Raumpraktiken vor. Wir untersuchen, wie diese historischen Ereignisse auch heute noch städtische Praktiken und das Gemeinschaftsleben prägen, und fragen: Wie können wir den daraus resultierenden Formen der Diskriminierung in unserer postkolonialen Gegenwart entgegenwirken? Welche dekolonialen Zukünfte können wir für unsere Stadtteile imaginieren und entwickeln?
Durch Sound, Tanz, Poesie, Performance, dekoloniales Storytelling und kollektives Kartieren fördern wir einen Prozess, der nachhaltige, gleichberechtigte Beziehungen zwischen dekolonialen Initiativen weiterdenkt und praktiziert. Counter-Mapping Berlin bietet Workshops, künstlerische Events und eine kollaborative Ausstellung und schafft so einen offenen kulturellen und künstlerischen Raum für Zusammenarbeit. Der Kiosk Batakari, ein Pop-up-Pavillon in den Hinterhöfen der Anthon-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße, wird als Drehscheibe für kritische kartographische Praxis und Vernetzung dienen.
Unsere Vision für die Zukunft Berlins ist es, die dominanten Raumpraktiken und sozialen Spaltungen, die direkt mit der Geschichte Berlins verbunden sind, zu überwinden. Durch kollektive künstlerische Counter-Mapping-Praktiken wollen wir in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadtgesellschaft und darüber hinaus eine dekoloniale, antidiskriminierende Perspektive entwickeln.

Im Rahmen des Projekts (April-Dezember 2024) veranstalten wir im Juli die "Counter-Mapping Days" und im November die "Poetic Cartography Days".

NovemberDas Amo Collective läd euch zu einer dreitägigen Festival-Residency ein, die Fürsorge, Nachbarschaftlichkeit und Freundschaft durch Poesie fördert. Die Poetic Cartography Days sind als Festival-Residency konzipiert, die Fürsorge, Nachbarschaftlichkeit und Freundschaft durch Poesie fördert. Über drei Tage hinweg werden wir gemeinsam mit den eingeladenen Künstler*innen sowohl öffentliche Momente mit dem Publikum teilen als auch intime Zusammenkünfte erleben, um eine Atmosphäre der Verbundenheit und Kooperation zu schaffen. 

Durch Performances, ortsspezifische Interventionen und Workshops werden wir erkunden, wer wir sind, woher wir kommen und wohin wir gehen, und dabei einen Raum der Verbindung und Solidarität kartieren.
Teilnehmende Künstler*innen und Poet*innen bei den Poetic Cartography Days sind unter anderen: Stefanie-Lahya Aukongo, Fatim Selina Diaby, &#38;nbsp;Hanita Firoozmand, Agie Gambian CookBook, Otis Mensah, Savannah Sipho, Rami Shalati, Nhã Thuyênand Daniela Zambrano Almidón.
Die Poetic Cartography Days dienen auch als Auftakt für den neuen Eingang des Instituts für Europäische Ethnologie (IfEE) im Amo Salon und der Ausstellung Amo Living Archive.

Die Counter-mapping Days sind eine lustvolle, spielerische Antwort auf die Berliner Konferenz und eine Gelegenheit für uns, innezuhalten, nachzudenken und eine gemeinsame Zukunft neu zu entwerfen. Während der dreitägigen Workshops werden wir Mapping und Wayfinding nutzen, um Communities zusammenzubringen – als ein Faden, der uns zu uns selbst, zueinander und zu dieser Welt zurückführt. Wir verwenden Karten nicht, um auszulöschen und zu trennen, sondern um zu offenbaren und zu verbinden. 
Die Counter-mapping Days sind inspiriert von dem afro-deutschen Aufklärer Anton Wilhelm Amo und diversen afro-diasporischen, queeren, mestizischen und anti-ableistischen Ausdrucksformen. Wir werden gemeinsam einen Raum für immersive Erfahrungen kreieren, der Workshops und Aktivitäten mit Orten für Kontemplation und Networking verbindet. Counter-mapping the Akan Experience: Die Auswirkungen der Berliner Konferenz entschlüsseln
Unsere Counter-Mapping-Reise beginnt mit der Akan (Nzema)-Community von Anton Wilhelm Amo.&#38;nbsp; Anhand ihrer Erfahrungen untersuchen wir, wie die Konferenz die Akan- Community in verschiedene Länder und Sprachen aufgespalten hat, und erhalten so wertvolle Einblicke in die breiteren Auswirkungen der Konferenz auf Communities in ganz Afrika. 

Der ghanaische Künstler, Performer und Forscher Kwame Aidoo befasst sich mit der Kultur, Philosophie und Kosmologie der Akan vor und nach der Berliner Konferenz.&#38;nbsp; Wir versuchen, die anhaltenden Auswirkungen des Kolonialismus zu verstehen und würdigen die Resilienz und das Genie der Akan-Gemeinschaft bei der Bewahrung ihrer kulturellen Identität und ihrer Verbindungen.

Food for thought: Tasting to connection
Food for Thought lädt die Teilnehmer*innen dazu ein, sich mit Lebensmitteln, Zutaten und Kochpraktiken auseinanderzusetzen, um unser Verständnis für unsere persönliche Geschichte, unser kulturelles Erbe und unsere Verbindungen untereinander zu vertiefen.&#38;nbsp; Der Workshop regt die Teilnehmer*innen dazu an, die Aromen, Geschichten und Traditionen hinter den verschiedenen Küchen zu genießen und so ein tieferes Verständnis dafür zu entwickeln, wie Essen uns verbindet.

Der Workshop zelebriert schwarze queere Musik und raumschaffende Praxis. In diesem Workshop beschäftigen wir uns mit Bewegung/Tanz als spiritueller Praxis und der Tanzfläche als heiligem Raum. Musik und Bewegung werden zu Landkarten, Wegweisern, Orientierung und Archiv.

Lasst uns die Kraft und den Reichtum der individuellen und kollektiver Verbindungen durch unsere Stimmen erleben. Unter der Leitung der Klassik- und Jazzsängerin Amanda Becker werden die Teilnehmer die tiefe Freude am Klang der Stimme erleben. Bei der Vorpremiere am 1. Juli wird sie Lieder aus ihrem neuesten Projekt singen, das auf Bell Hooks' Buch All About Love basiert.&#38;nbsp;

Die Haltestelle Stadtmitte verfügt über einen Aufzug, du musst jedoch eine kleine Straße mit abgesenktem Bordstein überqueren, um zum Bürgersteig zu gelangen.

Die nächsten Bushaltestellen sind Jerusalemer Straße (350m) und Werderscher Markt (450m).
Die Bürgersteige der Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße (vormals M-Straße) haben einen glatten Gehweg. Es gibt abgesenkte Bordsteine an der Kreuzung Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße und Markgrafenstraße.

Der Veranstaltungsraum befindet sich im Erdgeschoss und kann über eine mobile Rampe betreten werden. Die Tür öffnet sich nicht automatisch, wird aber entweder weit offen stehen, oder jemand wird dort sein, um sie für dich zu öffnen. Im Innenbereich haben wir einen Low Sensory Space mit verschiedenen Sitz- und Liegeflächen. Bewegung, Stimming, Pausen usw. sind dort willkommen, aber keine Gespräche oder laute Geräusche.

Stühle mit Rückenlehnen sind vorhanden. Wir haben Platz, um Gehhilfen, Stöcke usw. abzustellen.

Blinden- und Assistenzhunde sind bei uns willkommen.

Wir haben ein rollstuhlgerechtes Badezimmer. Das Bad hat eine Toilette mit Griffen und ein niedriges Waschbecken. Es gibt einen Mülleimer und Desinfektionstücher. Die Toilette ist genderneutral.

Für diese Veranstaltung sind keine ASL- oder DGS-Dolmetscher verfügbar.

Amo Collective Berlin

 is a group of students, artists, scholars, and members of civil society based at the Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, part of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The collective emerged through the anti-racist and decolonial struggles surrounding the renaming of our street after Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher and anti-racist pioneer of the early 18th century: Anton Wilhelm Amo.

Rows, a sound piece by Ghanaian-Nigerian artist and researcher Nnenna Onuoha, is part of a series that explores the history and renaming of M*Street. Over the course of five years, Onuoha recorded sounds along the street, capturing the rhythm of daily life—trains at the U-Bahn station, footsteps of pedestrians, protests, marches, and walking tours. She also conducted interviews with scholars and activists involved in the renaming debate. This series confronts the racism embedded in the M-word and the street's ties to histories of enslavement.This artwork is on display in the permanent exhibition at Amo salon Berlin.

Rows, eine Soundarbeit der ghanaisch-nigerianischen Künstlerin und Forscherin Nnenna Onuoha, ist Teil einer Serie, die die Geschichte und Umbenennung der M*Straße erforscht. Im Zeitraum von fünf Jahren nahm Onuoha Geräusche entlang der Straße auf, um den Rhythmus des täglichen Lebens einzufangen - Züge am U-Bahnhof, Schritte von Fußgänger*innen, Proteste, Demonstrationen und Stadtrundgänge. Außerdem führte sie Interviews mit Wissenschaftler*innen und Aktivist*innen, die an der Umbenennungs-Debatte beteiligt waren. Diese Serie legt den Rassismus offen, der in das M-Wort eingeschrieben ist und zeigt die Verbindungen der Straße zur Versklavungsgeschichte auf.
