AMO LIVING ARCHIVE
EXHIBITION

In 2024, Amo Collective Berlin was commissioned by the Institut für Europäische Ethnologie (IfEE) at Humboldt University in Berlin to collaboratively curate the newly redesigned entrance and exhibition area of the IfEE, the Berlin Institute for Migration and Integration Research (BIM), and the Georg Simmel Center for Urban Research (GSZ). The curatorial process took approximately six months and brought together various transdisciplinary collaborators that Amo Collective and the institute have worked with over the past five years.

This space is open to students, researchers, neighbors, and the broader public to explore the diverse research underway, learn about the ongoing efforts to rename the street, and discover resources inspired by the life and philosophy of Anton Wilhelm Amo. It invites engagement with student and research projects that bring public scholarship to life through creative media. Designed as a dynamic platform, the space supports a range of projects and encourages creativity and experimentation.

Special thanks to the IfEE administrative team—Carsten Hoch, Romy Klecker, Eduard Vollmer, and Daniela Weber—and to Felix Marlow, who initiated the collaboration with coopdisco, the institute, and students in 2022. We are deeply grateful to the students, professors, staff, scholars, artists, and civil society members who, over the past two years, have helped shape this into an open, inclusive, and transdisciplinary space at Humboldt-Universität.

The Core Exhibition is dedicated to showcasing our research and the ongoing initiative to rename M*Street, while reflecting on the legacy of Anton Wilhelm Amo. Visitors can also discover upcoming public events at the Amo Salon and view the new portrait of Amo, created by members of the Black Student Union.

The first Temporary Exhibition, which ran from November 2024 to May 2025, unfolded our project Amo Living Archive. This living archive celebrates the life and work of Anton Wilhelm Amo, the campaign to rename a street in his honor, and the broader activities of the Amo Collective. This archive is alive - as sociologist Stuart Hall describes it - "continuing, unfinished, and open-ended." It holds records on the history of ongoing struggles for justice and anti-racism and is organized into five main collections: Amo Salon, Anton Wilhelm Amo, Renaming Histories, Decolonial Flânerie, and Counter-Mapping Berlin by the Amo Collective Berlin.
